The Airport police have solved a theft case involving a box of 80 cellphones worth Rs 1 lakh after the arrest of a courier company driver on February 10. Police have recovered 35 cellphones worth Rs 43,750 from the suspect.
The arrested has been identified as David D’souza (26) of Somwar Peth. His accomplice Sitaram Arenor is yet to be arrested.
The incident came to light after Taranath Pokhrel (29) of Tingrenagar, an official of the Om Logistics Limited, registered a complaint with the Airport police earlier this month. In his complaint, he stated that one box containing 80 cellphones worth Rs 1 lakh had gone missing from the airport on September 9, 2014.
In a statement issued on Monday, Senior Inspector of Police Shri Sanjay Kurundkar of Airport police station, said Pokhrel had transported 70 boxes containing 5,580 cellphones from Noida to Pune on September 3, 2014. “However, one of the boxes containing 80 phones went missing from the airport after six days,” Kurundkar added.
“Pokhrel had initially taken up the issue with the airport officials and after concluding that it was not missing from their end, he filed a theft case,” he said.
A police team led by Sub Inspector of Police Rajendra Wagh, Santosh Jagtap and others laid a trap and took D’souza into custody on the basis of technical analysis of missing cellphones around 7pm on February 10 at 509 Chowk on Lohegaon Road.
During interrogation, D’souza revealed that he had stolen the box with the help of Arenor while loading goods at the airport.
“He also admitted of selling some cellphones at throw away prices to prospective customers to make easy money,” he added.
D’souza was in police custody till February 14. He was later released on bail.
Police have launched search for Arenor to recover the remaining cellphones.
