Rathod, Three Accomplices Were Arrested For Murder Of Security Guard
The Hadapsar police have recovered 10 motorcycles from a policeman's son, who was arrested along with three accomplices, for the murder of a security guard near the Hadapsar gliding centre on February 8.
The Osmanabad police have seized 14 additional vehicles from the two aides of Rajesh Shankar Rathod (23), the main suspect in the murder case. Rathod's father is a havaldar with the Tuljapur police in Osmanabad. A criminal on police records, Rathod was arrested on Friday , following a tip-off.
The deceased, Yogesh Devkate (24) of Sasanenagar in Hadapsar, was a security guard of a BSNL office.
Senior Inspector of Police shri Rajendra Mohite of Hadapsar police station told TOI on Wednesday that Rathod allegedly stole motorcycles from Hadapsar area and sold them for Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 to labourers in Umarga in Osmanabad in 2014-15.
Sr PI Mohite said that investigations have revealed that Rathod stole the bikes by breaking the locks or by pulling the ignition wire. He sold the vehicles to make a quick buck, he added.
Sub-Inspector Prasad Lonare of the Detection Branch of Hadapsar police said that Rathod was allegedly operating a gang of three to four men in Umarga and Hadapsar to carry out the thefts. The Osmanabad police were on the look out for Rathod and had arrested two of his aides and recovered 16 vehicles, but Rathod fled to Pune and started living in Sasanenagar, he added.
During interrogation, Rathod admitted to damaging the engine and chassis number of the motorcycles, said Lonare.
Fourteen vehicles were recovered from Rathod's aides in January which were allegedly stolen from Hadapsar, said sub-inspector Motiram Bagad of the Umarga police station.
“Rathod has allegedly stolen a large number of vehicles from Hadapsar. We are in process of seeking his custody from the Hadapsar police after completion of their investigations in the murder case,“ Bagad added.
Rathod killed Devkate and robbed him of his cash and cellphone with the help of three others. Devkate's cellphone was found with Rathod.
Devkate was studying under a tree in an open farm near the gliding centre when four men approached him demanding money . When he refused, they beaten him up and snatched his money and cell phone. Devkate was later bludgeoned to death with a huge stone.
The three others -Omkar Balkrishna Korde (19), Ananta Manoj Badakwad (19) and Chetan Ashok Vellure (19), all residents of Kalepadal in Hadapsar were arrested under sections 302 (murder) and 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or injury) of the Indian Penal Code.
Devkate, who was employed on a contract basis with BSNL, Sasanenagar, was a second year student of Arts.His body and clothes were identified by his family members, who came to Pune from Nanded on Monday .
The owner of the farmland, Mayur Pandhare (34), had found Devkate's body under the tree next day morning.Devkate's face was covered with a handkerchief. A set of general knowledge books was found nearby .
Police prepared a sketch of one of the assailants based on the information given by a witness. The breakthrough came when the police picked up Korde whose description matched the sketch. Korde broke down during interrogation and gave names of three of his friends.
The Hadapsar police have appealed citizens to call them on the telephone number 020-2699 6577 if their motorcycles were stolen in 2014-15.
